This talented ensemble of performers will transport you to the realms of ancient traditions and evocative melodies, enchanting your senses with their expertise and passion. Ali Rad, a master of the Persian Tar, brings nearly two decades of experience, having collaborated with diverse bands across New Zealand and Iran. His artistry on this plucked string instrument, renowned for its expressive sound, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Iran, spanning both classical and contemporary Persian repertoire. Imogen Granwal, an explorer of music and instruments from different cultures, embarks on a thrilling journey into the sounds of the Middle East. You might know her as a cellist with Orchestra Wellington, for this show she is playing viola da gamba and kamancheh. Manda Safavi, a Persian Daf player for over two decades, has graced stages both in Iran and Wellington. The Daf, a traditional Sufi percussion instrument used in the mystical 'Samaa dance,' harkens back to the ancient traditions initiated by the renowned Persian poet and philosopher, Rumi, nearly 700 years ago. Kamala Bain, an accomplished recorder and early music specialist, delves into the exploration of music from diverse cultures. As a founding member of The Night Watch Ensemble and a sought-after performer with esteemed ensembles like NZ Barok, she brings her expertise and passion to this mesmerising musical endeavour. Michel Alkhouri, a versatile double bassist and opera singer, combines his classical training from Syria, France, and England with a deep connection to his musical heritage. Having embarked on a journey with the oud, a traditional Middle Eastern string instrument, at the young age of 15, Michel seamlessly blends classical techniques with the soulful tones of the oud, captivating audiences worldwide.
